Spirit of America Youth Leadership Program

Thomas Jefferson wrote, “The key to the success of America would be an informed and active citizenry.” Since 1965, Freedoms Foundation has been committed to providing educational programs that help create such a citizenry. Through experiential learning and critical thinking exercises, Freedoms Foundation inspires the next generation to take up the responsibilities present in our democracy: respect, accountability, self sufficiency, defense of liberty, charity, and participation. The cultivation of an informed, involved American public is simultaneously one ofour country’s greatest needs and biggest challenges. Today’s youth—tomorrow’s leaders—must become the responsible citizens the UnitedStates needs, and this responsibility begins with a deep understanding of the principles on which the American government was founded.

Since 1973 the Broward County Chapter has been sending students to Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge located near historic Philadelphia, Birthplace of our Nation. Students have the opportunity to visit Historic Philadelphia and see the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Betsy Ross House, and ruins of Ben Franklin’s house. The four-day conference provides a wide range of educational programs that cultivated and engaged the students. It teaches them to be responsible citizens and focus on American history, democracy, free enterprise system, entrepreneurship, and the Medal of Honor.

Student Testimonials

I want to begin by saying thank you so much for sending myself and all the other students on the trip to Valley Forge. It was an amazing and unforgettable experience. I can’t really pick a favorite part because the whole trip was awesome! If I had to pick I would say seeing snow was the best of all. This trip has showed me that meeting new people is a good thing and not to be scared of sharing my opinion.

I want to make a difference, and even though today’s politics are corrupt, who knows? Maybe I can change the rules to the game. Whatever I do in life, I hope I uphold the principles of America. Most importantly, I hope that many more future leaders, artists, entreprenuers and world changers have a chance to visit Valley Forge. I would like to thank the Freedoms Foundation for accepting me on this fantastic trip. This is one experience that i will never forget. Forge. I have learned about the Constitution in a way that was above anything school could ever do. I have learned about the system that was used to make amendments. I was put in situations where I had to work with people that i hardly knew. Workshop that allow you to know yourselves on a deeper level, so you know what your strengths and what is your weakness.

There was not one activity that I found lacking. The weekend went by too quickly, but I’ll never forget my time or the people I met at Valley Forge. I cannot thank the Broward County Chapter enough for sponsoring me and for providing me with such an influential experience. I am not sure yet what I would like to do in the future, but before the trip, I had a strong preference for Political Science or Government. After the summit, I am even surer of my decision. Thank you again for providing me with such an invaluable experience.

At Valley Forge, I met numerous people from various places, including Colorado, California, Utah, Texas, and right here in Broward County. Everyone was just as excited as myself to meet people from all over the country and discover how they see the world from their perspectives.
